Researchers recruited 13 participants and exposed them to two carefully controlled lighting conditions during standard office hours — 8am to 5pm — in a randomized crossover design. Every other variable was kept identical: meals, darkness schedules, sleep timing.
The only difference was the light above their heads.
Natural daylight peaked at 100,000 lux around 12:30pm. Artificial LED held constant at just 300 lux throughout. Both groups spent evenings in dim light below 5 lux and slept in complete darkness — ensuring the daytime light was the only variable.

actually found.
Blood glucose stayed in range longer
Participants under natural daylight spent 59% of their time with blood glucose in the healthy range of 4.4–7.8 mmol/L. Under artificial LED lighting, that dropped to just 51%. Eight percentage points may sound small — but sustained over days, weeks, and years, that gap represents meaningfully different metabolic stress on the body.
The body switched fuels more easily
The respiratory exchange ratio — a measure of whether your body is burning carbohydrates or fat — was lower under natural light. A lower RER means a greater proportion of energy coming from fat. In practical terms: the body was more metabolically flexible, shifting between fuel sources as circumstances required rather than staying locked into carbohydrate dependence.
The body's clock genes woke up
Activity levels of Per1 and Cry1 — two core genes that regulate the circadian clock — were significantly higher after natural light exposure. These genes don't just control sleep timing. They coordinate metabolism, hormone release, cell repair, and immune function across the entire 24-hour cycle. When natural light activates them properly, the body's internal timing becomes more precise — and more efficient.
Energy sources processed differently
While serum insulin levels were similar under both conditions, the patterns of blood glucose and plasma free fatty acids diverged noticeably. The body processed energy differently depending on light environment — with natural light producing a pattern associated with healthier metabolic function. Same food. Same insulin. Different light — different result.

The study wasn't comparing extreme conditions. It was comparing a normal office with windows to a normal office with LED overhead lighting — the situation millions of people are in every day.

Get outside before 10am
Morning light is the strongest circadian signal you can give your body. Even 10–20 minutes of real outdoor exposure — without UV-blocking glass between you and the sky — begins anchoring your clock for the day, improving glucose metabolism and fat burning in the hours that follow.
Work near a window — with it open
Window glass transmits most visible light, including the intensities needed for circadian signaling. Sitting within a few feet of a window raises your effective lux dramatically compared to sitting under ceiling LEDs alone. Open the window when you can for an even fuller spectrum.
Take your lunch break outside
The study's peak light intensity occurred around 12:30pm — the same time most people are indoors eating at their desks. A 15-minute outdoor lunch break places your body in the exact light environment that produced the study's most favorable metabolic results.
Protect your evening darkness
Natural daylight only improves metabolism when the other half of the pattern is intact: dark nights. Bright light after sunset — from screens, LEDs, overhead lights — undermines the circadian advantages gained during the day. The pattern works together or not at all.
