It's the light.
We like to think kids "just don't want to sleep." That they're stubborn. Too energetic. Not tired enough. But the research points somewhere else entirely.
Even dim, soft, "cozy" light — the kind that feels harmless — can be enough to throw everything off. Not through behavior. Through biology.

This isn't speculation. A study published in the Journal of Pineal Research tested exactly this — on 36 preschool-aged children, aged 3 to 4.9 years, using measured light intensities and salivary melatonin samples. The findings were stark.
Melatonin isn't
a sleep hormone.
It's a signal.
It tells your child's body: day is over, slow down, prepare for sleep. But that signal is fragile. Especially in children.
Inside your child's eye are cells called ipRGCs — intrinsically photosensitive retinal ganglion cells. You don't need the name. Just what they do: they act as light sensors wired directly to the brain's master clock in the hypothalamus.
When light hits them, one message goes out:
The study that
changes bedtime.
Researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder recruited 36 healthy, good-sleeping children between 3 and 4.9 years old. Each child maintained a stable sleep schedule for seven days, then spent a controlled night in dim light of approximately 1.5 lux — barely enough to see.
On the final night, each child received one hour of light exposure at randomized intensities ranging from 5 to 5,000 lux — covering everything from candlelight to a bright office — in the hour before their habitual bedtime. Salivary melatonin was measured before, during, and 50 minutes after light exposure.
The number
that matters.
Not 10%. Not 30%. Eighty-five percent of melatonin production shut down — on average — by just one hour of room light before bed.
The range across individual children was 69.4% to 98.7%. There was not a single child in the study who escaped meaningful suppression.

Even dim light

The researchers split results into four intensity quartiles. The suppression at every level was severe. What's disturbing is how little light it takes to reach near-maximum effect.
It doesn't stop
when you turn off the light.
You'd think: lights off, problem solved. Melatonin comes back, child sleeps. But the study measured what happened 50 minutes after light exposure ended — and the news was worse.
For 62% of children, melatonin remained below 50% of its baseline level for at least 50 minutes after lights were turned off — regardless of how bright the original exposure was. The damage was done. Recovery was not influenced by light intensity.
This means the window for light damage isn't just the moment the light is on. It extends well into the time after. A bedtime routine that ends with lights-off at 8:00pm may still be delivering suppression effects at 8:50pm.
That's not a theoretical concern. That's exactly what this study measured, in children the same age as the ones most parents are trying to get to sleep right now.
Why bedtime
feels like a fight.
It's not just behavior. It's biology. You're asking your child to sleep while their brain is still receiving the message: stay awake, it's daytime.
The child isn't being difficult. The child is responding exactly as their biology instructs — to a lighting environment that says it's still afternoon.

What actually helps.
You don't need complicated sleep protocols. You need to fix the environment in the hour before bed. The study makes it clear where the damage comes from — which also makes it clear where to intervene.
Dim the lights — seriously dim
Aim for very low light in the last hour before bed. Not "warm LED at 50%." Real dim — below 10 lux if possible. A single candle is about 10 lux. The study showed that even 5–40 lux caused 77.5% melatonin suppression — so the floor needs to be as low as you can reasonably achieve. Red-spectrum light at very low intensity is the least disruptive option available.
Stop screens earlier than you think
Phones, tablets, and TVs emit light directly at close range — making them among the most potent melatonin suppressors in the evening environment. The study's suppression data tells you the timing: effects linger for at least 50 minutes after exposure ends. Work backwards from bedtime accordingly. One to two hours is a reasonable target.
Make the bedroom properly dark
Not "kind of dark." Dark. Street lights through curtains, standby LEDs on electronics, and charging cables with indicator lights all contribute to the light environment your child is trying to sleep in. Blackout curtains and covering any LED indicators removes the problem entirely.
Start the dim-down routine earlier
Given that suppression persists for 50+ minutes after light exposure ends, the light environment needs to shift at least 90 minutes before the actual sleep target — not at the moment you want lights out. If your child should be asleep by 8pm, the environment needs to transition by 6:30pm at the latest.
